Behind this flawless showroom facade lies an even more incredible journey. In this feature, we retrace the shop's soul back to a father-son project that vanished for 25 years before traveling 1,000 miles back home. The Origin:
Every great shop has a soul, and for Matranga Hot Rods, that soul is rooted in a deep family bond. The story of the Matranga collection didn't start with a massive business plan; it started in a family driveway with a 1934 Ford pickup.
When Kent Matranga was in high school, he and his father, Bob Matranga, decided to build Kent's very first car. It was a true labor of love. They modified the little 1934 Ford, doing the mechanical work together, while Kent’s grandmother meticulously hand-sewed the velour upholstery (even adding Subaru Brat-inspired jump seats in the bed). The truck was a masterpiece of its era, winning numerous ISCA car show trophies.
But as life moved on after high school, the truck was sold. For 25 years, the beloved Ford pickup vanished.
Bob Matranga, however, never forgot the truck that started it all. A quarter-century later, Bob set out on a relentless mission to track down his son’s first hot rod. He found it over 1,000 miles away, tucked away halfway across the country. Miraculously, the truck was a perfect time capsule. Absolutely nothing had changed—the original lacquer paint (sprayed in a driveway decades prior) still shined, and the grandmother's custom upholstery was still soft.
Bob made the owner an offer he couldn't refuse, chartered a private flight and a transport truck, and brought the family heirloom back home to California. Reuniting with that '34 Ford sparked a renewed, unstoppable passion for automotive builds, laying the foundation for what is now the world-class Matranga Hot Rods shop and collection.
The Philosophy:
"We aren't just restoring cars," says the team at Matranga. "We are rewriting their future."
Traditional restorations have their place in museums, but Matranga builds cars meant to be driven. Their mission is simple yet incredibly complex: preserve the iconic, head-turning aesthetics of vintage classics while completely eliminating the headaches of mid-century automotive tech.

In one corner, a master fabricator is widening rear wheel wells to fit massive modern performance rubber onto a one-of-a-kind custom creation. In another, an electrician is meticulously routing a modern wiring harness through a pristine, painted firewall.
